Viru Viraraghavan (* May 9, 1937) and his wife Girija (* September 17, 1939) are passionate Indian rose growers. As a studied chemist, Viru worked, among other things, as secretary and director of the Agriculture and Horticulture Department in the state of Andhra Pradesh. After 20 years in government service, he took early retirement in 1980 to devote himself entirely to rose growing together with his wife Girija in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, South India.
He had already started breeding in 1965 - always with the aim of achieving unusual colors and working with roses that were ignored by the rose companies in the West. But it was only when he retired in 1980 that he and his wife were able to concentrate fully on it.
From 1980 the couple then bred with two Indian wild roses,
Rosa clinophylla Thory and Rosa gigantea Collett ex Crép., to obtain resilient, healthy, evergreen roses for the warm Indian climate. They call them "free form roses" because many of their roses don’t fall into the rigid categories of the modern classification like hybrid teas, floribundas etc.
Both also played a prominent role in the Indian Rose Federation.
A tribute to Girija and Viru Viraraghavan, the pioneers of breeding roses for warm climates.
